A week in Puglia + Matera

Hi everybody, how are you?
Today a slightly different post, not the usual capital or big city, but many beautiful and different towns, a little scattered here and there in Puglia, some beach with a Caribbean sea style and as a plus a few photos of Matera, in Basilicata. What do you think?
Let's start this trip with Alberobello, famous for the trulli, these small houses a bit strange where you can enter and in some cases also sleep like hotels. They are just in a few streets in the town, but they are so special, beautiful to see, that is really worth to see them, they are unique in their kind.

Oggi un post leggermente diverso, non la solita capitale o grande città, ma tanti paesi bellissimi e diversi tra loro, un pò sparsi di qua e di là in Puglia, qualche spiaggia con un mare stile caraibi e come plus pure qualche foto di Matera, in Basilicata. Che ve ne pare?
Iniziamo questo viaggio con Alberobello, famosa per i trulli, queste piccole case un pò strane in cui puoi entrare e in alcuni casi anche alloggiare. Sono solo alcune vie all'interno del paese, ma sono talmente particolari, belli da vedere, che vale davvero la pena fare un salto a vederli, sono unici nel loro genere.

Always in the area I recommend the Castellana Caves, especially if it is summer and it's a hot day, it's perfect to spend some time in the cool (there are 16°C all year) and admire incredible stalagmites and stalactites, but unfortunately, except for the first cave, it is not possible to take pictures for the rest of the tour.

Sempre in zona vi consiglio le Grotte di Castellana, specialmente se è estate e si muore di caldo, giusto per trascorre un pò di tempo al fresco (ci sono 16°C tutto l'anno) ed ammirare stalagmiti e stalattiti incredibili, ma sfortunatamente a parte per la grotta iniziale per il resto del percorso non è possibile fare foto.

Next stop: Polignano a Mare, famous for diving races, the restaurant inside a cave on the sea and the beauty of the view, especially if you go to the sunset as I did.

Prossima fermata: Polignano a Mare, famosa per le gare dei tuffi, il ristorante all'interno di una grotta sul mare e la bellezza della vista che si ha, specialmente se andate al tramonto come ho fatto io.

Always in the proximity, if you have time, go to Locorotondo and Martina Franca, two beautiful cities, a bit like all the cities in Puglia: unique of its kind.

Sempre nei dintorni, se avete tempo, fate un salto a Locorotondo e Martina Franca, due bellissime città, un pò come tutte le città della Puglia: uniche nel suo genere.

Another important stop is Ostuni, the white city, so called because of the completely white houses. Walk through the streets, look up and down the city and fall in love with the most hidden corners, because in the end every spaces is fascinating, to be photographed.

Altra tappa importante è Ostuni, la città bianca, chiamata così per via delle case completamente bianche. Passeggiate tra le vie, curiosate su e giù per la città ed innamoratevi degli angoli più nascosti, perché alla fine ogni scorcio è affascinante, da fotografare.

Going down a little bit to the south you will find Lecce, a city full of history, churches and culture.
Not far from there on the east side you will find many beautiful beaches such as Le Cesine, Baia dei Turchi, the famous and crowded Torre dell'Orso and many others, but do not forget the Cave of Poetry (Grotta della Poesia) where you can dive (if you have the courage) and if you do not want to find people you should go at the dawn so you have it all for you for a while.

Scendendo un pò più giù troverete Lecce, una città piena di storia, chiese e cultura.
Non lontano da lì sul lato est troverete tantissime bellissime spiagge come Le Cesine, Baia dei Turchi, la famosa e affollata Torre dell'Orso e tante altre, ma non lasciatevi scappare la Grotta della Poesia dal quale potete tuffarvi (se avete il coraggio) e se non volete trovare gente vi conviene andare all'alba così da averla tutta per voi per un pò.

Going further along the coast you find Otranto with its castle, the harbor view and the beautiful and decorated church.

Scendendo ancora lungo la costa trovate Otranto con il suo castello, la vista sul porto e la chiesa decorata e molto bella.

Continuing further down to the "end" you arrive at Santa Maria di Leuca, the most southern place in Puglia with its sanctuary overlooking the two seas, the Adriatic that joins the Ionian.

Proseguendo sempre più giù fino alla "fine" arrivate a Santa Maria di Leuca, il posto più a sud della Puglia con il suo santuario con vista sui due mari, l'Adriatico che va ad unirsi allo Ionio.

On the other coast there are many other cities: Gallipoli, Porto Cesareo and many beaches, but it would take too much times to visit all them.
In the north we find Bari the capital of Puglia, rich of beautiful churches, the castle with walls on one side and many important shops on the other. If you are in those parts maybe to take the plane go visit it.

Dall'altra sponda tante altre città: Gallipoli, Porto Cesareo e tante spiagge, ma servirebbe troppo tempo per visitarli tutti.
Al nord invece troviamo Bari il capoluogo della Puglia, ricco di chiese bellissime, il castello con le mura da un lato e tantissimi negozi importanti, famosi dall'altra. Se siete da quelle parti magari per riprendere l'aereo fateci un salto.

On the opposite side near the border with Basilicata you can find Altamura, famous for bread, very pretty as a town, if you are in that area.

Nel lato opposto quasi al confine con la Basilicata trovate Altamura, famosa per il pane, molto carina come città, se siete da quelle parti.

Travel Bonus: Matera, not in Puglia, of course, but in Basilicata, the capital of culture for 2019, I must say that it deserves this title, it is really beautiful, majestic, with its stones that transform everything almost into a labyrinth, up and down between them attached to the city, incredible, super-recommended.

Bonus del viaggio: Matera, non in Puglia ovviamente, ma in Basilicata, capitale della cultura per il 2019, devo dire che si merita questo titolo, è davvero bella, maestosa, particolare con i suoi sassi che trasformano il tutto quasi in un labirinto, su e giù tra di loro attaccati alla città, incredibili, super consigliata.

Finally before concluding this post some advice:
- if you can you should rent a car to move, it is the most convenient method and it will give you the chance to see many different places or just to go swimming in the sea,
- if you want to visit I would not recommend going in August, or anyway in the summer as I did, because of the hot weather, better a cooler time and maybe with only few people,
- taste the specialties of the place, especially the "pasticcioti", an exquisite dessert with delicious pastry cream (I would like one in this moment 😋).

Infine prima di concludere questo post qualche consiglio:
- se potete affittate un'auto per spostarsi, è il metodo più comodo e vi darà la possibilità di vedere tantissimi luoghi diversi o semplicemente per andare ad abbronzarsi al mare,
- se volete visitare vi sconsiglio di andare in pieno agosto, o comunque nel periodo estivo come ho fatto io, perché si muore di caldo, meglio un periodo più fresco e magari con poca gente,
- assaggiate le specialità del luogo, specialmente i pasticciotti, un dolce squisito fatto di pasta frolla e crema pasticcera, delizioso (quanto ne vorrei uno in questo momento 😋).
